Just a Beginning

June 21, 2023

I arrived at the community center that day, motivated and ready to go to work. While I was sorting out the documents on the table, an anxious Spaniard hurried into the community center. There was a nervous and confused expression on his face, and his brows were furrowed, as if he was under great pressure. This sudden situation caught my attention immediately, and I immediately realized that he needed urgent help.
I approached the Spaniard without hesitation, with a warm determination in my heart. Although Spanish is not my first language, I have worked hard to learn the language in hopes of being a bridge to help others. I communicated with him in the Spanish I learned, trying to understand his question.
Soon, I found out that he had some legal problems and knew nothing about the legal system here, which made him very confused and helpless. He confided to me his predicament, expressing his helplessness at being unable to solve the problem. In his anxious eyes, I saw his desperate desire to find a solution.
I deeply feel the importance of learning Spanish, not only for my own academic achievement, but also to be able to help people in need like him. I decided to do my best to help him.
I acted as a bridge and guided him to the staff at the community center. I translated and explained patiently, helping him understand the legal process in plain language and guiding him on the actions he should take. Even though it took some time and effort, I knew it was the best thing I could do.
As I continued to answer his questions, his nervousness and confusion gradually subsided, replaced by a deep sense of gratitude and trust. There was a smile on his face, and a hopeful gleam in his eyes. I realized that even though it was a simple favor, it meant a lot to him. This ability to help others solve problems is what I pursue and what drives me to fight for it.
This experience made me deeply realize that the power of language lies not only in communication, but also in connecting people's emotions and needs. It can break barriers, build bridges of communication, and bring hope and warmth to others. From this opening, I understood that the purpose of learning Spanish is to connect and understand others. It is not just a language skill, but a cultural bridge that connects emotions and thoughts between people. By learning Spanish, I can understand and respect different cultural backgrounds, and enhance friendship and cooperation with Spanish and Latin American people.
This is just the beginning, and I am welcoming this new starting point. Learning Spanish not only provides me with cultural inspiration, but also makes me a person who can help and influence others. I will continue to study hard, continue to expand my language skills, use what I have learned to create more opportunities, help more people, and truly experience and practice the spirit of "this is just the beginning".
